C6: Drone Technology

A drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle — meaning it flies without a pilot inside. It’s usually controlled using a remote controller or a mobile app, and has rotors (fans) to lift it into the air.

Drones are used in:

  1. Agriculture:

    • Drones spray pesticides evenly on crops.

    • They capture images to show which parts of a field need water or fertilizer.
Example: Farmers in India use drones to spray fertilizers faster than doing it by hand.

  2. Medicine Delivery:

    • Drones carry vaccines or emergency supplies to remote mountain villages.

    • They fly over rivers or forests where roads are blocked.
Example: In Africa and parts of India, drones deliver medicines during floods or health crises.

  3. Rescue Operations:

    • Drones with cameras and thermal sensors locate missing people after floods, landslides, or earthquakes.
Example: Rescue drones helped locate stranded families during heavy floods in Kerala.

  4. Environmental Protection:

    • Forest officials use drones to monitor wildlife and prevent illegal tree cutting.

    • Drones help count animals in forests safely.

  5. Photography & Mapping:

    • Drones take pictures from the sky for movies, sports, and even real estate ads.

Scientists use them to make maps of difficult terrains.
