C7: 3D Designing (BlocksCAD & Tinkercad 3D)

Aim

To design a useful 3D object (mobile holder or lamp cover) using drag-and-drop tools in Tinkercad.

Requirements

  • Computer/Laptop

  • Internet connection

  • Free Tinkercad account

Step-by-Step Procedure

Step 1: Open Tinkercad

  1. Go to www.tinkercad.com.

  2. Sign in with your account (or create a free one).

  3. Click on “Create New Design”.
You will now see a blue grid (the workplane). This is where your object will be built.

Step 2: Add the Base

  1. From the Shapes panel on the right, drag a box shape onto the workplane.

  2. Resize it by:

    • Clicking the white corner dots and dragging.

    • Or using the ruler tool to set exact dimensions (e.g., Length = 60mm, Width = 40mm, Height = 10mm).
This becomes the base of your mobile holder.

Step 3: Add the Back Support

  1. Drag another box shape.

  2. Resize it tall and thin (e.g., Length = 60mm, Width = 5mm, Height = 80mm).

  3. Rotate it 90° and place it at the back of your base.
This will hold the phone upright.

Step 4: Add the Side Walls (Optional)

  1. Drag two thin box shapes.

  2. Resize them (e.g., Length = 5mm, Width = 40mm, Height = 50mm).

  3. Place them on the left and right sides of the base.
These prevent the phone from falling sideways.

Step 5: Create a Slot for the Phone

  1. Drag another box shape but change it to a hole (from the shape panel).

  2. Resize it (e.g., Length = 10mm, Width = 40mm, Height = 20mm).

  3. Place it at the bottom of the back support to make a slot for the phone to slide into.
When grouped, this will cut out the slot.

Step 6: Group Shapes

  1. Select all objects (Ctrl + A or drag to select).

  2. Click on “Group” (top right).
The solid blocks and hole blocks merge into one final object.

Step 7: Final Check

  1. Rotate the view (using the cube in the corner) to see all sides.

  2. Adjust measurements if needed.

  3. Use the color tool to assign colors (optional, for fun).

Step 8: Save & Export

  1. Click on “Export”.

  2. Choose STL file (for 3D printing) or OBJ (for advanced use).
Your design is now ready to be 3D printed or shared.
