C9: 3D Designing & 3D Printing

Aim:

To create a functional 3D product in Blender, starting from your own sketch idea.

Requirements:

  • Paper and pencil for sketching

  • Computer with Blender installed

  • Mouse for easier control

  • (Optional) Reference image of your idea or similar products

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Sketch Your Idea

On a piece of paper, draw a simple product idea.
Examples:

  • Desk organizer

  • Mobile stand

  • Mini storage box

  • Bookmark holder

  • Key hanger

Tips:

  • Focus on functionality — What problem does your design solve?

  • Add simple dimensions or notes about size.

  • Keep the design minimal with basic shapes (no need for perfection).

This step builds design thinking: how your idea will help someone in daily life.

Step 2: Start Blender and Set Up the Workspace

  • Open Blender.

  • Delete the default cube (select → press X).

  • Adjust your view using:

    • Scroll wheel to zoom

    • Middle-click + drag to rotate

    • Shift + middle-click to pan

Understanding navigation is crucial before modeling.

Step 3: Build the Base Shape

  • Press Shift + A → Mesh → Cube or Cylinder depending on your sketch.

  • Use the Scale Tool (S) to resize.

    • Example: S, Z → stretches vertically

    • S, X or S, Y → resizes horizontally

  • For curved objects, use Add → UV Sphere.

Example:
If your idea is a desk organizer, start with a large cube as the base.

Step 4: Add and Combine Parts

  • Add smaller shapes for compartments or handles.

    • Example: Add another cube or cylinder.

  • To merge them into one solid object:

    • Select both → press Ctrl + J (Join), or

    • Use Modifier → Boolean → Union for cleaner merging.

This simulates how real products are built from multiple joined parts.

Step 5: Refine with Precision

  • Use Move (G) and Rotate (R) to adjust parts.

  • Activate the Measurement tool (N → Item → Dimensions) to ensure accurate size.

  • Check symmetry and proportions — they make products visually balanced.

Optional:
Add cutouts or holes using Boolean Difference (subtract one shape from another).

Step 6: Apply Colors and Materials

  • Go to Material Properties → New → Base Color.

  • Add textures or finishes (metal, plastic, matte).

  • This gives your design a realistic look and helps visualize the final product.

Step 7: Render and Save

  • Position your camera (press Numpad 0).

  • Add light (Shift + A → Light → Point).

  • Go to Render → Render Image (F12).

Save the rendered image (Image → Save As) for your portfolio.
